Focus

Anonymity is architecture, not a policy.

A policy is a promise someone can quietly relax. This is built so that the sharp original never reaches your browser at all, on any page, at any zoom.

What we mean by never shown in the clear

Every participant on this site renders from a color field derived on our servers, not from a photograph. The person becomes their color before anything is sent, and that color is the only version this site has ever been sent.

No hover state, no zoom and no code path undoes it, because the sharp image is not here to undo. Apart from the Focus team, every face you can see clearly on this site is an AI-generated illustration owned by Focus. No real participant appears in the clear anywhere.

If you are a participant

  • You are paid for the interview, and paid again as your participant works.
  • You consent to every use, and consent is specific rather than blanket.
  • You are never shown in the clear, on our site or in any customer’s study.
  • You can leave at any time, and your participant leaves with you.
  • We will always be transparent about how your participant is used.
  • Your answers are never sold on as a dataset.

The full terms exist and are readable. This is the version we would want first. Where the two disagree, the fault is ours, and the terms get rewritten.

If you are a customer

Your study stays yours

Questions, attachments and results stay inside your study. Participants carry nothing between clients: what you asked, and what you uploaded to ask it, does not travel.

Ready for procurement

Security documentation is prepared rather than promised, and asking for it at the start is the fastest way through a review. We would rather answer the hard version of the question early.

Where this is still moving

A per-use overview, so a participant can see how theirs has been used, is on the roadmap and not live yet. We would rather say that plainly than imply it exists.
